I am not a real French food kind of person but, fortunately that is not really what I would call this place. Although they have french names on the menu, a filet with peppercorn sauce is still just a filet with peppercorn sauce same as it would be at EBT's or Room 39. Anyway, I liked the steak and the sauce was really good and the soufflé was wonderful. Service was friendly and yes, there were a lot of older people there. What do you want to do, lock them up somewhere you don't have to see them? In my opinion, that is why it was so much quieter than most places and we were able to have conversation without yelling at each other. Good food, good service decent price for what you get. Not many places can have that said about them anymore. PS That salad with the avocado and shrimp...Yummy.

Top notch, attentive service in an unassuming strip mall in the middle of a residential area. Regardless of that fact, the food was artfully, skillfully prepared, and my wife and I savored every bite. This place is old, and so were most of the patrons, but I'd go back in a heartbeat. Well done.

When I move from Kansas City one day, this will be one of the restaurants I'll miss. Other restaurants could take a hint from Tatsu's. It truly makes you appreciate the quality of simplistic, but exquisite food, prepared expertly, with service of the highest professionalism. Our waiter, throughout our dinner (again, forgot to get his name, but we were a party of 3 seated at 5:30pm on Wednesday, January 8th) was on the game the whole night. Always polite, but not stuffy, and always bringing what we needed in a timely manner. We've always had good service here, unfailingly!!!! I started with the special appetizer of the evening, oysters on the half shell, lightly breaded and served in a lemon/white wine sauce. The woman who brought these to the table asked if she could put them in the middle of the table, but I explained that I'd be the only one eating them (mom & dad don't like them.) "More for me!" was my reply, & she patted me on the back. That's what I'm talking about -- profession but very warm & caring service! You have to love that! Needless to say, oysters gone in 2 minutes, & if we had been the only party dining in the restaurant, I would have drank the juice. Yep, that good!!!! House salad is dressed with their house dressing (for sale for take home), & it's so good: savory, with a vinegar kick. Our waiter failed to offer us cracked pepper, but when it tastes this good, who cares!!!!!! Bread is regular (I believe) sourdough variety, with nice butter to spread on. For my entree, chose another special of the evening: herb-encrusted rack of lamb, served in an au jus sauce, with broccoli, carrots, & sweet potatoes. Full-flavor, tender, succulent!!!! High-quality dish!!!! Now, this restaurant is a french/asian fusion-type style. If you don't like lamb, definitely go for the chicken teryaki entree. But honestly, any dish I've had has been sublime every time!!!!!! (A friend of mine also recommends the carrot soup; it's awesome too, I had it on a previous visit!) Ended the meal with Cherry Delight: Puff pastry filled with warm vanilla custard & brandied cherry sauce, w/ a light dusting of powdered sugar. I thought the custard could have been a tad warmer, but otherwise a heavenly way to end the meal. Started the dinner off with an Absolute martini straight up, with house-made blue cheese stuffed olives (my signature drink!), & paired a McManis Cabernet Sauvignon from California with the lamb. The location of this restaurant is in a mainly residential neighborhood, which I think adds to the charm. It's nice to know you can be in the suburbs, & still find such high quality dining options tucked away. I'm glad I don't live close ... I'd be eating there at least once a week!

If you could give more than 5 stars on a review than I would! We came here for lunch and ordered the scallops as an appetizer. They were cooked perfectly and some of the best scallops we have had in a long time. The salad dressing on the salads that came with lunch was amazing! Wait staff was super friendly. Try the creme brûlée!!!

Vastly overrated but lives on the memories of people who ate their with their families a billion years ago. It's a cuisine mish-mash of adequate chicken teriyaki (for anyone raving about it there is far better elsewhere) and a very un-French series of dishes. It's too run-of-the-mill to be new cuisine, and the place looks tired like an Alpine Dennys. Pass.

A private function brought us here for a three course meal during off hours. I can't speak to the older clientele, but I am not sure how that would equate to good food or service. Our function was all middle and upper middle aged, with a few young guns thrown in... just in case that matters. ; ) Everyone had salad and bread. The salad was simple tossed greens, lightly dressed. That's it. I actually like that, but wished for a better mix of greens. I had eggplant for my entree and my beloved has salmon. The eggplant was a thick slice from a large globe fruit (yes, eggplant is a fruit) that had apparently been steamed with the rice on which it was served. It was delicate and delicious, and covered with a garlic/tomato sauce. The salmon was tender and tasty as well... just simply prepared. The veggies were all pretty good and obviously cooked in well salted water. I love it when food is seasoned! The carrots has a sweetness to them one could find not to their liking. The desserts, a Napoleon and flan, were okay. Not spectacular, but still good. And at least the portion was right. I do not like big desserts that result in a coma. lol Service was just fine and we never had to ask for a thing.

Excellent food and excellent service. If you're looking for classic French cuisine delivered with midwestern charm, this is the place. Owner/chef Tatsu Aria is fantastic. Let me take a moment also to express my surprise at finding food of this high caliber in a suburban Kansas strip mall. It's an oddly placed gem. And so people are fully informed: if you're looking for a happening, trendy environment with modern decor, this is not the place. I'd also say Tatsu's isn't about mind blowing, uniquely innovative presentations. It's about classic style cooking executed exceedingly well. It's about great food in an environment where you can talk and enjoy it. I also advise finishing with a Grand Marnier souffle!

Sigh. I would love to give this place higher marks. Sadly, I cannot. I didn't venture out at my second visit. I stuck with the Chilean sea bass that I so enjoyed during my first visit. It fully met expectations. The avocado-crab salad that preceded it, however, was a slight disappointment. There was an $8 up-charge. Fine. I'd gotten a tad tipsy off a martini, so I shamefully did not give my food the full attention it deserved. I wish I had. It was the oddest crabmeat ever. I would almost bet it wasn't real crabmeat. Surely not? Also, when I'd read that my half avocado would be stuffed with lump crab, I just expected something different. It was more like half an avocado topped with crab salad. Confusing. Outside of this, I still found the vegetable accompaniments (broccoli, mashed potatoes, and ginger carrots) good, but I was somewhat annoyed that there aren't other choices. The display on our plates seemed like something you'd see at a senior home cafeteria. Everything was sorta halfway mushy. My palate would've been much more stimulated if there were different textures in the trimmings. Anyway, I was in great company, so it was a pleasurable time...but fast forward a couple hours. I had the worst food poisoning. I'm isolating it to the crabmeat. Of the five people in my party, only the two of us who ate that got sick. It was not fun. I probably should've done my part as a responsible patron and called to tell them, but I was too busy sleeping off the pain to do much else. The public deserves a profound apology from me. Sorry. In all, the service was much better this time. We had a quirky and nice server who took our prodding humor in jest and was patient with our numerous questions. And again, my sea bass was great. The bite of roasted duck I had was fabulous, as was the salmon in puff pastry. But it will be a while before I accept another invitation to dine at this establishment. My stomach can only take so much.

Best escargot in kansas city. In the shell & cooked in a delicious garlic butter sauce. They melt in your mouth. Great portions, fresh food, knowledgeable waitstaff. One of my favorite French gems in KC.

To make a long story short, we went here because I had a coupon. I left my coupon at home. The food was okay. Everything was cooked well, but little flavor. Older crowd, same sides with every entree, not sure if I will go back. But . . . I do still have that coupon.

tatsus is a nice place to bring a loved one out just to eat or for a celebration. The clients I wish can be a little younger than 60 but hey whatever works for them.

Went with the wife on Halloween night. Wasn't very busy but I took that to be b/c of the holiday. It also meant we were catered to very well by our attentive server. Half-bottles of wine are a plus since we had to drive home. A bit off the beaten path, and I am not sure it was worth the drive from downtown. Was the food good? Yes. But the atmosphere reeked of an old country club that needed a serious remodel. As such the atmosphere really offset the food and service. It is worth a try, then decide if you will be back.

Tatsu's is the most bizarre and delicious restaurant in Overland Park. Tatsu's is a French restaurant, with an Asian name (n my opinion) located behind a strip mall and fire station, in the middle of what seems like a predominantly residential area. The bizarre continues, when you walk in to this quaint, dark restaurant you get the feel that you are walking into an old folks home. I don't know if it was the smell or the fact that most of the people there are blue-haired (or no haired) and in the upper seventies. Bu try your best to get past all of this random strangeness and grab a table, because the food and wine is absolutely fantastic. Every time I go, I ordered the teriyaki chicken and that will never change- it is the moistest most flavorful chicken I've ever had the pleasure of consuming. I also take the liberty of sampling my companions (or neighbors) meals if they have ordered something different, and whatever it is, it is always delicious. Their wine selection is fantastic and they are always willing to pair something with your meal for you. The grand finale is of course the desert. When I was there most recently, they have a chocolate moose with vanilla ice cream and a Grand Marnier sauces. The kicker was that the sauce was literally a bottle of Grand Marnier with a spout on it- that they left on the table! We gladly doused our desserts and then stole couple private sips for ourselves. It was the perfect cap to a deliciously bizarre but uniquely fantastic dinner at Tatsu's.

This a great place in Prairie Village for a special dinner or when you just want delish french food. It looks elegant, but as you know..in Kansas City you don't have to dress up to eat anywhere unless you want to. Our favorites include the salmon with the champagne sauce, beef tenderloin in a wine sauce, sauteed chicken in a lemon herb sauce, the sea scallop appetizer, and the teryaki chicken is the moistest, flavorful dish! I'm dying to try their rasberry and chocolate souffle. French desserts are so beautiful..and mouth watering...

Went here for a prix fixe meal and the food was just ok. The mashed potatoes that came with one dish was kind of gross and almost TV dinner like. The meats were cooked well and the sauces had a decent flavor to them. I also enjoyed sorbet they had. The owner is nice and so is his wife. The place was filled with older people and it almost felt like we were eating at a retirement home. I probably won't come back here.

The crab had a little more mayo than I usually like but overall the dish was great. I had Beef Bourguignon since this is usually safe at a french restaurant. My husband ordered veal with a mushroom, peppercorn, cream sauce. The food was good. Classic dishes, nothing too special. We would go back but look forward to trying some of the other french restaurants in the future.

If you want somewhere to eat good food, drink lovely wine and actually hear your companion's conversation in a restaurant, for a change, then this is the place for you. The entrees came with a small but tasty side salad and the portions are generous so we had no need for an appetiser but did have a smidgen of room left for dessert. I had the chicken in a Calvados sauce, it was very tender, the vegetables were perfectly cooked and the sauce was not overpowering but delicious. My companions had the sea bass and veal liver and both thought they had made a great choice. It is not a young people's hopping ,cool place but when you have been partying every night for 5 days and need a place to relax and enjoy the food sans chaos then this is a lovely spot.

Such an odd place! We had a coupon; I would not return for the meal we had without one. The escargot was pretty good, though not as grand as at Room 39. I enjoyed my carrot soup, but my husband was underwhelmed with the bourguignon. Something about the combo of the layout, lighting, clientèle and staff at this place is very weird.

Tatsu's is an ok place to eat. Went for a birthday lunch with another couple and the prices were a bit pricey for what you get. The atmosphere is strange and is in need of an update, very dated. Food was ok, the sea bass and veal liver were the best dishes at our table. The desserts were just ok, nothing like you would think for a french place. I won't be back, but my husband loves the place. Only carrots and broccolli for sides, weird. We are in our 60's and were the youngest patrons there!

The menu is boring and limited. Teriyaki chicken is on the menu. That says enough. The seating is cramped in this overpriced establishment. It is supposed to be haute French cuisine, and the prices are, but the owners fail to recognize personal space, atmosphere, and creative menu changes play a part in the over all experience.

French place on Roe and... 87th? If you Love provencial French food, this is a gem. The normal food; teryaki chicken, pea soup is all ok. The main event is the crazy French stuff you can get here: oxtails, foie gras, butter radishes, marrow based dishes and the best bechemel you will have in the Midwest. Great little wine list. If you speak French, odds are your waiter or waitress does too, so go crazy. Don;t let the location throw you off, it's in a strip mall behind a fire stationFrench place on Roe and... 87th? My husband and I went to lunch at Tatsu's while in town a week ago. It had been about 10 years since our last visit. We arrived early; didn't have reservations and were seated next to the kitchen door while 90% of the restaurant remained vacant. The restaurant started to fill and the clientele was older as mentioned by other reviewers. Clearly they were regulars. It was nice to dine in a place where people actually dressed to have lunch. When we left the restaurant was still only half full and yes, we were still sitting next to the noisy kitchen. The service was average, nothing special or out of the ordinary. We ordered the daily luncheon specials and they were fantastic. My husband had the chicken cordon bleu and I had the beef tips with a wine and mushroom sauce. Both were absolutely amazing. The food was almost worth forgiving the mediocre dining experience, until I got to the car.... I had placed my handbag on the floor next to my chair. When we got in the car I noticed a nice big piece of chewed gum stuck to the bottom of my $400 handbag. There are too many really good restaurants in KC to go back to Tatsu. This was quite the up and down experience.

On my last visit to Tatsu's, I had a terrible experience. My steak was undercooked and I sent it back. It was returned to me still undercooked. I asked specifically for Tatsu, and he came to the table. As we were discussing how the steak had been under cooked, a lady came out of the kitchen and insisted that Tatsu return to the kitchen. She was very rude to us and controlling of Tatsu and said they had no time to attend to our table. I don't know who she was. I have been to Tatsu's probably close to 100 times in the last 20 years and was very disappointed to see this kind of customer service. My under cook steak was never addressed. I told Tatsu, as he was being dragged off by this unknown lady, that evening I would not return again. It's been nearly a year, and I have kept my word. I am very sorry that A 20-year dining relationship had to end this way. Not once has there been any attempt by Tatsu to reach out and reestablish this relationship. After spending well over $20,000 with this restaurant over the years, I am very disappointed.

Sad to have to give a bad review but...yuck! I kept an open mind past the teriyaki chicken (?!), but wow! My table had crumbs, the curtains and salt shaker had food stuck to them (gross!) The butter was not creamy and too salty. The crab cream soup was good but I would guess the crab was canned. The lemon butter chicken was rubbery and way too lemony. Couldn't eat it. Tatsu was kind about it and removed it from my bill. Valerie was a good server and also kind. Unfortunately I will not return.

My husband ordered veal with a mushroom, peppercorn, cream sauce. The food was good. Classic dishes, nothing too special. We would go back but look forward to trying some of the other french restaurants in the future.

87th? Cooking technique is not at issue here...I just wish they had a more imaginative menu. Service could be better at this price point. Regardless, their souffle is wonderful.
